Over the pandemic, in addition to stress baking and doomscrolling I retreated into comfort drawing. In the early days of lockdown the attention span required to work on the current issue of GUN felt like more focus than I could muster, so I fell back on what I’ve always done as a way of escaping the anxiety of the world, drawing X-men. In particular I revisited my personal phase, the phase when I jumped on, the Silvestri/outback era, familiar characters were re-presented in new and strange ways as we had ever seen them before. Polaris became a super villain, Dazzler dressed like a super hero, Psylocke… went through some changes. I thought, collectively, we were all going through our own Siege Perilous, who would we become on the other side?
